Andy Burnham planting trees with Regatta

The Queen's Green Canopy

As part of The Regatta Group’s wider sustainability programme, Regatta Great Outdoors, along with Craghoppers and Dare2b, is a platinum supporter of The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC).

This is a unique tree planting initiative, created in celebration of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in June this year, encouraging everyone all over the country to #PlantaTreefortheJubilee.

Launched in September 2021 at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, activity around QGC has been gathering momentum ever since and as a Group, we have been lucky to be involved with many initiatives along the way.

Green Skills

In November, we had the opportunity to help a group of young unemployed people as they embarked on a new, specially designed Green skills training programme at Capel Manor College, London's only environmental college. The course will provide them with the vital skills they need to find jobs in the green sector and we hope that they will become a legacy to the great work of the Queen’s Green Canopy. We provided them cold weather gear to make sure they were warm, dry and comfortable whilst doing their practical training outside.

National Tree Week

Also in November, we celebrated National Tree Week! Working with our partners, English Heritage we were able to show how they were celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with their own tree planting and one of their head gardeners was able to offer advice on the best ways to plant a tree!

Champion Cities

National Tree Week culminated in the launch of Champion Cities, another initiative through QGC, with the announcement of Manchester being one of the first cities to be recognised as a Champion City because of its ambitious plans to plant 3 million trees and become carbon neutral by 2038 in Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham was on hand at an event at Gatley Hill, Stockport to plant the first jubilee tree in Greater Manchester and our own Chief Operating Officer David Holt joined him.

2022

Maximising on the ideal tree planting season – October to March - we will be organising staff volunteering tree planting sessions in February and March in areas of Greater Manchester that need it the most. We will also be supporting our local primary schools to help them plant their own trees, to benefit themselves and pupils to come.

In the spirit of the QGC initiative, encouraging the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen, The Regatta Group is also encouraging our colleagues worldwide to plant trees in their own countries. This is a longer term initiative which is one of our commitments to slowing the impact of climate change.

Visit www.queensgreencanopy.org for advice on how to plan your own tree planting, including which trees are best, where to plant them and the – all important – how to plant them. And don’t forget to pin your newly planted Jubilee trees to the QGC Map: https://queensgreencanopy.org/map-education-hub/qgc-map/#/

Happy planting!
